As the dust settled, Susan’s ears were ringing, masking the screams of men and nurses. The Matron and a Sister were on the floor motionless. Another shell exploded less than a 100 feet away and the ground felt as though it lifted. Shrapnel ripped at the building and a piece grazed Susan’s leg. She crawled to the Matron and Sister and saw that the Matron was bleeding but still breathing.
