James has no known grave but is remembered on the Vimy Memorial. When he enlisted his parents were recorded as living at 54 Constable St, Dundee. He also had a brother who served during the war, he was, Pte Peter Dorward, 14704, Fort Garry Horse, Canadian Cavalry.

James Dorward   14703   Canadian Machine Gun Corps

MILITARY MEDAL FOR DUNDEE CANADIAN.

Sgt. James Dorward, a Dundee Man in the Canadian Machine Gun Corps, has been awarded the Military Medal.  He got this honour for good work in the recent heavy fighting, when, despite the fact that he had been gassed and wounded he stuck to the guns, of which he was in charge, although the Germans made no fewer than ten counter-attacks in order to regain the ground taken from them.  The Canadians drove them back every time.

Sergeant Dorward, who is 28 years of age, is the third son of Mrs Dorward, 56 Blackness Road, Dundee.  He emigrated to Canada about six years ago, and joined up at the outbreak of war.  He was amongst the first drafts to come over to this country.  Sergeant Dorward has been wounded three times.
