Joseph was the son of Robert and Rachael McLaren of Lochee, Dundee. He studied at St Andrews University as a Student at Law 1902-1903. He is believed to be the brother of Sgt Andrew McLaren, 7414, 2nd Battalion, A.S.H. who was killed in action, 26.08.1914.
