More about Thomas Duncan

Private Duncan was nearly 29 when he enlisted in July 1915. He intially joined ‘3/3’ of the 3rd Highland Field Ambulance unit, a Dundee raised medical unit. ‘1/3’ and ‘2/3’ were deployed overseas whereas ‘3/3’ remained in Dundee throughout the war training recruits for drafts to ‘1/3’ and ‘2/3’.

Duncan was later deployed to Southampton for onward passage to France with a draft of replacements. He landed at Rouen on 14/05/1917. Although initially with ‘1/3’ Highland Field Ambulance, he was later attached to 46 Field Ambulance. With the exception of leave, he returned to the UK on 18th January 1919, was disembodied from full time service and transferred to reserve on 14th February 1919 and was eventually discharged on 31st March 1920.
