More about Adam Wood Yule

Adam was the brother of Cpl John Yule 8955, 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders, who was killed in action 14.09.1914. His three other brothers also served in the Great War, Robert (1895) Black Watch, Samuel (7394) & Stewart (7143)

DUNDEE FAMILY HARD HIT.

The war has levied toll on few households so heavily as on that of Mrs Yule, 20 Hill Street. Dundee.

She had five sons serving with the colours—Stewart (33), a corporal in the 1^st Black Watch : Samuel (31), a lance-corporal in the same regiment : Adam (29), a private in the Black Watch : John (27), a corporal in the Cameron Highlanders, and Robert (24), a piper in the 4th Black Watch (Territorials).  Of these Adam and John have been killed and Samuel wounded.

Intimation of John’s death was received early this month.  A letter from Stewart, who is unwounded, broke the news of Adam’s sad end.  It seems that while Adam was in the trenches a piece of shell struck him in the hip and penetrated as far as his stomach.  He was taken to hospital, and before he died, he lifted his watch, and, handing it up to an officer, asked him to see that it reached his brother Stewart.  The watch had been presented to him by the officers of his regiment in appreciation of his work as a servitor in the mess.  It was handed to Stewart all right, and when the latter wrote home the news of his brothers’ death, he said. “Mother, put a stout heart to a steep brae!”

This double blow has prostrated the mother with grief.
