The family were known as both Whannell & MacWhannell/McWhannell
This man is listed on the original Dundee Roll of Honour as MacWhannell and has two separate entries in the Peoples Journal War Memorial supplement, one as Whannell and one under the name of MacWhannell.
Alexander’s brother Thomas also served during the Great War and returned home safely. He was Pte Thomas MacWhannell/McWannell, 39434, 2nd Company, 16th Battalion Royal Scots, who was taken prisoner 11.04.1917 at Vimy, and held captive at Limburg Lahn P.O.W. Camp in Germany.
