William was the brother of Pte Charles Shand Mitchell, S/43889, 6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, who was killed in action, 27.08.1918 and is also believed to be the brother of E.R.A. John Mitchell, Royal Navy.

Sapper William Mitchell, Royal Engineers, was the eldest son of Mr Charles Mitchell, 17 Blackness Street. He had been seven months at the front. Sapper Mitchell was 21 years of age, and before enlisting was an apprentice baker.
