More about Thomas Allday

Thomas is believed to be the brother of Sgt George Allday 6934, 1st/7th Battalion Black Watch, who died of wounds 18.09.1916.  Both men are remembered on the Grove Academy, Broughty Ferry school war memorial.

BROUGHTY TERRITORIAL MISSING.

The photo is that of Sergeant Thomas Allday, of the 4th Black Watch, son of Mr H. G. Allday, 1 Victoria Place, Broughty Ferry, who is reported missing since 25th September.

Mr Allday would be greatly indebted to any member of the Dundee Territorial Battalion who could give him any news concerning his son, who is well known having served several years in “Dundee’s Own,”

Twenty-one years of age, Sergeant Allday is well known in Broughty Ferry for his connection with the Y.M.C.A.

He was previously employed as an apprentice with Mr James Ramsay, goldsmith, High Street, Dundee.

Confirmation granted at Dundee, 21 June, to Henry George Allday, Mantle Manufacturer, 79 Murraygate, Dundee, Executer dative qua father. Value of estate, £193, 7s. 2d.

Thomas Allday was born in Dundee on 19th May 1894.  He was the son of Henry George Allday, a draper, originally from Southampton and Emma Kate Allday, nee Tuppen, originally from Brighton. Before enlisting in Dundee, Thomas was an apprentice watchmaker and was well known for his connection with the Y.M.C.A.  He served with the 4th Battalion of the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders).  On 26th Feb 1915 he was admitted to hospital with influenza and transferred back to Cardiff’s King Edward VIII hospital.  He was baptised as an adult in the hospital, by officials from St German’s church, Splott on 27th May 1915.    On recovering, he returned to France but was killed in action on 25th Sep 1915 on the Western Front in France aged 21.  He is remembered on the Loos Memorial in France (panel 78-83).  He is also remembered on the Grove Academy memorial plaque at Broughty Ferry, Dundee and the war memorial plaque at St German’s church, Cardiff.
